The history of Reliefography.
In 1937 the physicists F.Fisher, H. Thiemann and F.Mast have offered the
electro-optical converter with the oil relief carrier in the Swiss institute of
the technical physics.
In 1956 the French scientist M.Ope has offered the electro-optical converter with
the membrane relief carrier which is a prototype of the modern modulator of
light (GLV), used in a laser television projection.
In 1957 the American scientist V.Glenn has offered the electro-optical converter
with the thermoplastic relief carrier, allowing to remember the phase relief
information.
In 1980 prof. of MIREA Yury Guscho has offered an electro-optical method and the
device of light modulation on gel layers. This electro-optical light modulator
was named by author as “Relief”. They often use abbreviation as LMR. See the
site of MIREA www.mirea.ru where is “Priority direction”, “Reliefography”. Light
modulator Relief (LMR) operation is based on an electrical signal transformation
into a geometrical relief of a gel thin transparent dielectric layer surface.
The basic results of work of MIREA
under the direction of prof. Yury Guscho are the following:
1. The series of long-term theoretical and experimental investigations of the
interaction between electromagnetic and (or) corpuscle radiation and deformable
fluid or elastics viscous layers (thin films), which are made of dielectric or
semiconductor materials, situated on a rigid support and being under the
influence of electric, magnetic or heat fields have been executed.
2. The mechanism of the media surface deformation has been analyzed, and the set
of optimal characteristics of the light modulator "Relief" has been found due to
correlations derived between geometric, mechanical and electrical parameters.
3. An exclusive program for the optimal set of parameters calculation for the
light modulator "Relief" was been created. The program has been based on solving
the 17 boundary tasks with the mathematical physics equations on the surface
deformation of an elastics viscous layer of a certain thickness under the
influence of modulated electric field.
4. Optical methods and devices for visualizing the relief record have been
developed.
5. Working samples of the electro-optical light modulator "Relief" with high
operation speed, wide temperature range and low energy consumption have been
created.
